- Spend on handbags and haircuts as they are the two things you wear every day.
- Stay classic, with the best quality you can afford. Once you've established a solid collection of staple pieces, add your trend pieces. A couple key pieces a season is all you need.
- Buy only well made garments in exceptional quality fabrics that will last. It may mean that you cannot buy a large number of items, but the ones you do buy will last....and as they are classic pieces you will not have to replace each season.
- Fabric quality is key and it's also reflected in the price. If you are on a limited budget, don't be afraid of gently used pieces. There are some amazing finds in consignment stores. Natural fibers such as wool and silk will last for years if taken care of properly.
- Have garments altered to fit as though they were made for you.
- Treat your clothes with respect...as if everything is expensive. Polish your boots and shoes, and have the lifts and soles repaired when needed. Follow washing instructions on your clothing. They are there to ensure your garment lasts. If possible, always lay or hang your garments to dry. Iron or steam before you wear...each time.
- Customize or refresh. This means that if you have a fabulous piece, make it your own by changing buttons or other hardware. Perhaps tailoring it so it stays with current styles.
- Get correctly fitted for your lingerie. You are most likely not a 34 or 36 C! Up to 85% of women wear the wrong size bra. You also need to be refitted at least once a year as your weight fluctuates and you age, or have babies. Underwear...seamless is the way to go. If everything fits properly, you should look smooth...as though you aren't wearing any.
- The right accessories - This is where you can have fun. Find unique pieces that flatter more than one outfit.
For shoes and belts. Stick to one color. Handbags...go for fun colors that compliment your outfit. Again, the handbag is where you can splurge as you will carry it every day for at least a season.
- Dress to the occasion. Be polished and classic for work, a simple little black dress for parties, and a good classic trench and well fitting jeans for an afternoon out.
